Slick school mural celebrates Africa Day

A MURAL combining characteristics of traditional African and Irish dress was unveiled in the grounds of Old Bawn Community School as part of Africa Day celebrations.

The mural was unveiled last week by Shamrock Rovers and Cape Verde footballer Roberto Lopes and Minister for Overseas Development and Diaspora, Colm Brophy TD ahead of Africa Day on May 25.

The vibrant creation was developed by Transition Year students from the school with the help of street artist Arthur Oner.

It’s now an attention-grabbing feature on a wall in the school’s sensory garden, which was painted by Arthur Oner.

Ursula McCabe, principal of Old Bawn CS, said: “We did the mural because we wanted to mark Africa Day, particularly because we have so many African students in our school and community.

“It’s very slick and well done. It features a lady whose face is half African and half European, and the students came up with that idea and helped the artist to decide what to do.”

The mural is part of Irish Aid’s Africa Day celebrations and is supported by Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

This year will see Ireland’s largest-ever Africa Day programme, with events being held nationwide.
