SOUTH Dublin Taekwondo recently played host to their last tournament of the year when they staged the Irish Club Poomsae Champion-ships in their home of Tallaght Leisure Centre.

The event attracted 210 competitors from Ireland, north and south, the Isle of Man and the UK to compete for honours at the technical ‘patterns’ discipline of taekwondo known as ‘Poomsae’ with South Dublin taking the overall team prize.

There were players showcasing their abilities in individual divisions, mixed pairs (male and female) and three-person teams (three male or three female) of all ages and ability.

The local club had the majority of its players on the mats and all went home with some medals on the day.

Among the performances of note included the medal winning display of trio Oisin Murphy, Sean Byrne and Shae Yambao.

Newly-promoted black belts brother and sister Jed and Kim Rena were successful in all three divisions in which they were entered, including the mixed pairs.

Commenting on the event South Dublin TWD Club Coach Robert Taaffe noted “There is normally a technical event at the end of the year which proves to be a great finale to our competitive calendar.

“It was great to see so many newcomers on the mat and all those who were focused on the technical discipline of taekwondo will be well positioned to sit their next examination in the near future.

South Dublin Taekwondo noted thanks to South Dublin Sports Partnership who supported the entry of their team on the day together with the Department of Finance Tourism & Sport who part-funded equipment utilised for the event.

The overall team honours went to Queens University (third), Cheol Taekwondo (second) and South Dublin (winners), giving the locals a clean sweep of team trophies at all Irish Taekwondo Union Events once again this year.
