Special Olympics star returns to hospital intern job

SPECIAL Olympics medallist Eoin O’Connell this week returned to his intern position at Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) following the games in Berlin, Germany.

Eoin, of D6 Special Olympics Club, took home bronze after competing in the Open Sea Swimming 1,500m event – his first time to represent Ireland at the international games.

Eoin is an intern on the WALKways TUH programme, a transition programme for adults with intellectual disabilities to gain experience in order to access paid employment in the open labour market.

Starting at the local hospital in 2018, the programme, according to TUH, has provided a ‘rich learning ground for interns to experience the world of work in a structured, nurturing and inclusive environment’.

Eoin began his WALKways journey in September 2021 and over that time has gained experience from working in the Centre for Learning and Development, the Phlebotomy Department, Pastoral Care, Speech and Language Department and Catering.

As Eoin’s internship resumed after the games, he was snapped proudly wearing his medal in TUH, where there has been lots of congratulations from his fellow interns, colleagues and friends.
