St Anne’s on the double

CELEBRATIONS were in full swing in Bohernabreena last week after St Anne’s successfully completed their drive for both the Under 16 Division Five and Under 15 Single Code Orange league titles.

On Thursday, the younger cohort put Fingallians to the sword to record an emphatic 5-14 to 1-10 victory and subsequently sewed up the league after being handed a walkover in their final game.

While the Fingal outfit were bottom of the division, they did not go down without a fight against a determined Anne’s side, who had to scrap tooth and nail for every ball.

And yet, it was the handywork of Ava Barnes, Abaigh Pollock and Mya Clare that pushed the Bohernabreena outfit into the lead.

The dynamism and strength of Barnes was crucial to the victory, with her filling in in defence when she needed to before being deployed further forward to turn the screw.

While Yasmin Knowles had a great game in goal in the first-half, she had to be withdrawn because of injury and her replacement, Sarah Walsh, was equal to the standard, executing a number of fabulous saves.

Twins, Abbie and Katie Doran, kept the scoreboard ticking alongside Cara Jones and Amy Tyrell in the forward line.

The victory over Fingallians put Anne’s joint-top of the table with St Margaret’s.

However, the local girls claimed the silverware on the head-to-head record after carding a 9-10 to 2-10 win over St Margaret’s in April.

Before that, the Under 16s side beat Fingal Ravens on their own turf on a scoreline of 4-11 to 1- 7 to guarantee themselves the Division Five crown.

Pollock, Barnes and Clare were just as important to the victory with the latter pair causing a lot of damage down the wings.

Barnes scored a peach of a goal when she took on and beat several players before slotting the ball into the net out in Rolestown.

Full-forward Katie Callery really flexed her full range of ability to help get the Bohernabreena outfit over the line, with her physicality and powerful surging runs proving a nightmare for the Ravens defence.
