St Kevin’s take Division Two title

ST KEVIN’S GNS landed the FAI Girls Schools League Division Two title following a 3-0 victory over Donabate Portrane in Roadstone last week.

Two goals towards the close of each half by Lauryn McCabe, the sister of Ireland Senior Women’s team captain Katie McCabe helped see them over the line against a gritty Donabate outfit.

St Kevin’s GNS celebrate winning the FAI Girls Schools League Division Two title in Roadstone.

It was Caoimhe McGuire who opened the scoring for the Kilnamanagh side 15 minutes into the match and they would have added to that a lot sooner had it not been for the superb performance of Donabate goalkeeper Aoife Burke and defender Jessica Hannigan.

At the other end of the pitch, the back four of Carla Keoghane, Aoife Kavanagh, McGuire and Kayla Maguire proved uncompromising as was Kevin’s brilliant goalkeeper Sophie Sheridan, who saw just one shot beat her in the entire competition this season.

Both Carla Muldoon and McCabe went close on a number of other occasions for the Tallaght side and it required another super scoring strike by the latter to make the game safe.

It was Donabate’s first time to reach a girls soccer final, and they will take plenty of positives from their performance under captains Jessica Coogan and Isabelle Coogan.

For St Kevin’s GNS, it was their first season in 11-a-side soccer and they have benefitted greatly from the work of coaches Paul Murray and Damien Power as well as Maire Kenny and Clare Norton who help run the team.

“It was a great experience for these players to play in Shamrock Rovers’ training ground and receive their medals from Keith Fahey” said Kenny.
