St Mark’s Silver Surfers impress at snooker classic

SILVER Surfers from St Mark’s Snooker Club, which have a combined age of 900, got top marks in their recent Classic 2022 tournament.

The Silver Surfers Classic 2022 was hosted by Ken Doherty Snooker Academy in Terenure which saw the players battle it out for the chance to be crowned champion of the tournament in their third competition.

The tournament took place over the course of two days, Tuesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 5.

The two players in the final were John Murphy and John Hume, with John Murphy winning the final over three frames.

The team took their initial break-shot for their inaugural Snooker Competition back in 2018, with Jimmy Dunne coming out victorious and Pat O’Reilly picking up the runner-up trophy.

St Marks Silver Surfers is an active retirement group, and the snooker team has an incredible combined age of over 900, with many of the members in their 70’s.

The team currently has 110 concurrent members, with a further 44 on the waiting-list.

Member of the club, Brian Merriman, organised the tournament and told The Echo of his appreciation for the three competitions.

He said: “It was all a bit of fun, and we’re talking about lads here where the average age is about 70 – and they really are great for their age group.”
