Strike-out for single mother accused of stealing

A WOMAN who stole clothes and sheets from Penneys in Liffey Valley received a strike-out in Blanchardstown District Court.

Deborah Ryan, aged 28, with an address at Cashel Road, Crumlin, pleaded guilty to stealing clothing and sheets worth €48.50 from Penneys, Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, on June 29, 2018.

Sergeant Geraldine McManigan told Judge David McHugh that at 5.50pm on June 29 last, Ryan entered Penneys and selected a number of items before leaving without paying for them.

She said Ryan had no previous convictions.

Ryan’s solicitor said his client was a 28-year-old single mother. He said Ryan had her child on June 2 last and on the date of the offence she had taken a Valium.

The solicitor said Ryan is currently on maternity leave from a catering company, a job that requires garda vetting.

He asked the judge to leave his client without a conviction.

Judge McHugh said that he would take the plea in mitigation at its highest point and struck out the case.
