Students laptop boost

EIGHT students from Old Bawn Community School (OBCS) were recently selected to receive laptops which were supplied as a result of a bursary provided by an international engineering consultant company.

PM Group, which has offices in Belgard Square, provides a €50,000 bursary for sixth year and transition year students from the school over a four-year period.

The aim of the bursary is to encourage and support the students’ interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and to pursue third-level education.

The collaboration includes the provision of laptops for a select group of Leaving Certificate students who move forward to STEM-related courses in third-level education, while mentoring is also provided.

This week, eight past pupils of OBCS, who are studying biomedical engineering in Trinity, engineering in Trinity and in TUD, construction management in TUD, architectural technology in TUD and science in UCD, were selected to receive laptops.

Principal of OBCS, Ursula McCabe, said: “We are very pleased to partner with PM Group in supporting our sixth year and TY students as they pursue third-level education.

“I’m particularly delighted that PM Group is committed to providing mentoring and internship opportunities for our students and supplying them with equipment that will be greatly needed for their studies.

“This will be critically important for them as they transition from the school environment to third-level education.

“This will help our students greatly and promote the STEM subjects in our school. Old Bawn Community School would like to thank PM Group most sincerely for their generosity to our students.”

The bursary is now in its second year, and part of the collaboration includes Tallaght based PM Group providing spaces on its TY Programme for fourth year pupils and internships for students from OBCS looking to pursue engineering courses at third level.
