Students take part in national project to commemorate Good Friday agreement

BALLYFERMOT secondary school pupils took part in a national project that commemorated the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Up to 45 students from St Dominic’s College, Ballyfermot, read and distributed printed copies of Senator George Mitchell’s speech to members of the public outside Leinster House.

The project was organised by charity Narrative 4, The Ireland Funds and Senator George Mitchell to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Senator Mitchell delivered a speech at Queen’s University Belfast on April 17 as part of the Agreement 25 Conference, reflecting on the peace process in which he served as a primary architect.

Students from St Dominic’s College, Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh in Limerick, Priory Integrated College in County Down and Malone Integrated College in Belfast read and distributed printed copies of Senator Mitchell’s speech to members of the public outside Leinster House, Queen’s University in Belfast, Bedford Row in Limerick and the Parliament in London.

Irish author Colum McCann, co-founder of Narrative 4, a global non-profit headquartered in Limerick, said: “This project is a way of honouring the legacy of our peace process, and teaching the youth of today about the necessity for dialogue.”

Caitriona Fottrell, President and CEO of The Ireland Funds said: “Peace and reconciliation is at the core of The Ireland Fund’s mission, demonstrated by its long history of investing in organisations across this island that promote collaboration and peacebuilding.

“There is a whole generation of young people who do not remember the Troubles or the peace process, but who have enjoyed its legacy of peace in Northern Ireland. We believe this project is a fantastic way of marking this important date, but also to educate young people about this important topic.”
