Submission chosen for Glenview roundabout

A SUBMISSION of artwork has been chosen for the N81 Glenview Roundabout.

A two-stage open competition was held this year which saw 28 applications submitted for a commission for artwork for the roundabout which lies between Tallaght Village and the M50 on one of South Dublin’s main transport routes, the N81.

The chosen sculpture to be installed on the roundabout is a 7m tall, 6.5m wide piece of art which references the spire of St Maelruain’s Church in Tallaght, the buildings and housing surrounding it and the wider area of Tallaght, as well as the diversity of the communities in the area.

The coloured-steel sculpture came from artists Liam O’Callaghan and Mark Clare, who scored the highest across all of the criteria.

In March this year, South Dublin County Council announced the competition for the large-scale sculptural project, with €50,000 allocated to it. The brief that was laid out for the artist’s was: “Submissions should demonstrate the county’s energy and dynamism, reflected in new residential developments, re-developments and increasing cultural diversity, in a fresh and colourful way.

“This rich history, coupled with its young and vibrant present, are key to the identity of South Dublin County.”

The competition saw 28 applications submitted in response to the brief, and a selection panel then selected six applications for further development to progress to stage two.

According to South Dublin County Council, the contract with the artists is currently being finalised and is expected to be installed towards the end of Spring 2022.
