Summer camp brings sunshine as Gaeilge to Tallaght children

THE Gaeltacht was brought to Tallaght last week when primary school children enjoyed a week-long summer camp as Gaeilge in Dominic’s Community Centre.

The local centre, based in Avonbeg, staged a five-day, fun Irish camp after securing funding from Foras na Gaeilge – the body responsible for the promotion of the Irish language throughout Ireland.

Over the course of the week, 17 primary school kids engaged in various activities such as baking, cooking, arts, games and nature walks as Gaeilge – with the week ending on Friday with a special party and certificate presentation.

Deirdre Cleary, Manager of Dominic’s Community Centre, said: “The week went really well and it was great to be able to give local children the opportunity to use and enjoy the Irish language outside of a school setting – and in their community.

“This was our first year to do Gaeltacht Tamhlacht and due to its great success we hope that it can become a summer tradition.”

The project, which was facilitated by Irish school teacher Mark Boggins, was also visited by Tallaght support dog Apple (or Úll as she was called on Friday), who dropped in to celebrate the end of Gaeltacht Tamhlacht with its young Gaelgeoirí.

Dominic’s Community Centre also runs an Irish conversation class for grandparents who mind their grandchildren, so that they can help with their homework.
