Summer Local – A ‘treasure trove’ of the River Liffey available to explore

PADDLING one’s way down the scenic leafy parts of the River Liffey is something that has become a very real possibility through an accessible rafting service.

Adventure is out there. And it’s also nearby, with the “treasure trove” of the River Liffey available to explore on a personal raft from the Canoe Centre in Palmerstown.

Established in 2009, by the team at the Canoe Centre, Rafting.ie was established to give clients a unique, fun and safe way to discover their surroundings via the River Liffey.

Across multiple routes, families and individuals can get the opportunity to raft their way through landmarks such as Farmleigh Silver Bridge, Strawberry Beds, Shackleton Mills, and even try spot a kingfisher en route to the famous Lucan Weir.

On the short loop trip, which is viewed as something that is ideal for families or first-time rafters, people can discover some history and see even more stunning wildlife en route to the famous Lucan Weir on the classic trip.

Along the way, groups can navigate through four weirs and see landmarks such as the Farmeligh silver bridge, Strawberry Beds, and Shackleton Mills among other things.

The sights and sounds of the Liffey along the rafting routes offer a unique view of the life surrounding it, in it’s wilder, more biodiverse-rich environment upstream from the city centre.

On a smaller two-person and four-person raft, a guide will accompany clients by kayak or on the bigger seven-person raft, an experienced guide will be aboard to aide in the exploration.

Independent exploration is also an option with the two- and four-person rafts available for rent.

Each year, Rafting.ie runs school tours and camps throughout the school holidays, while groups of all sizes can also be accommodated for some team-bonding.

Following a rafting experience, which can last between one-and-a-half or two-and-a-half hours, the trips can be capped off with a refreshment, snack, or Italian stone baked pizza.
