ON FRIDAY April 22, Tallaght Community Arts will mark the centenary of the reading of the proclamation by Patrick Pearse on Easter Monday, 1916.

A series of 15 readings of the Proclamation at 4 mins past each hour from sunrise to sunset will take place outside The Civic Theatre Tallaght.

Proclamation

The Proclamation will be read by individuals of all ages in Irish, English and other languages representing some of the cultural diversity of the county. The Mayor of South Dublin Councillor Sarah Holland will read the 12 04 time slot.

The readings will be on a small stage outside the Civic Theatre with a backdrop of two specially designed and printed banners made by 10 participants working with artist and printmaker Jim Cathcart.

The event is also a celebration of the cultural and social changes that have taken place in Ireland over the last 100 years.

It acknowledges Ireland’s growing cultural diversity and the contribution that people from different cultural backgrounds are making to Irish contemporary life.

Since January artist/printmaker Jim Cathcart has worked with 10 participants drawn from across the county in an exploration of what the Proclamation means and what it inspires in people 100 years on. Together they have created an original arts work – a printed banner to serve as a backdrop for the event.

The readers of the proclamation will be individuals from a range of backgrounds as well as from schools and community organisations in the country.

The event will be filmed over the day by media artists Square on Square. A copy of the edited film will be presented to the County Library Local History section as part of the 2016 Commemorations archive.
