Tallaght lost one of its greatest citizens

Tallaght and society lost one its greatest citizens in the death of Tim Nolan, Bancroft. Tim’s funeral took place on Tuesday.

Tim was employed in the grocery sector, and co-founder of the Irish Grocers Benevolent Fund (IGBF). Since his retirement over twenty years ago Tim continued as a voluntary member and was a great support to many businesses and families in difficulty.

They had a very friendly ear in Tim.

A lady with two small children who lost her husband in a tragic accident over forty years ago told me that he worked in the grocery trade, and Tim called her to see if the IGBF could be of any assistance. His voluntary work was national.

To do justice to Tim would justify a book. He was a great human being, neighbour, gentleman, and regarded as a legend in his profession.

His great work in the grocery trade was done quietly. He was a daily Mass goer in the Priory and usually spent twenty minutes in silent prayer before Mass began.

His spirituality was a great inspiration in his work. The Nolan family were devastated over thirty years ago when their son Fergal was tragically killed in a fall in the Dublin mountains. Even then Fergal was regarded a potential rugby international.

Did Tim ever get angry? Yes, when it came to planning decisions in Tallaght.

His language wasn’t exactly dictionary language. His dissatisfaction of the establishment doing what they liked ignoring the views of the communities. Tim had a great sense of community.

Bancroft and Main Road paid their own tribute to Tim and family as his funeral drove through the estate, and up Main Rd. Neighbours lined up at their front gates as the funeral went by.

The Flanagan girls brought their musical instruments as the funeral stopped to hear them play.

To Agnes and family. You have lost a very special person. He was also very special to us in the community. One little consolation is that he and Fergal will be together in Heaven in the presence of the Lord.

Goodbye Tim, we will never forget you.

Aidan Thomas, Bancroft
