Tallaght’s Alan Joyce steps down as CEO of Australian airline Qantas
QANTAS Airways Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce is to step down from his role at Australia’s flagship carrier, reports William O’Connor.
From Springfield in Tallaght, Joyce will step down from the position in November, and Vanessa Hudson has been announced as the airline’s next chief executive officer.
Joyce, who is 56-year-old, has been the longest-serving current CEO of a major Australian company.
Joyce is a past pupil of St Mark’s Community School and also attended Dublin Institute of Technology and Trinity College Dublin.
He was appointed CEO of Qantas in 2008 having previously worked in Aer Lingus while Hudson, currently the airline’s finance chief, will be the first woman to occupy the CEO’s chair at theAustralian airline.
During his term at the company, Joyce steered Qantas through the 2008 financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, fluctuating fuel prices, and growing competition in the aviation sector.
Joyce has been a vocal supporter of campaigns for marriage equality, the recognition of Aboriginal people in the nation’s constitution and for women’s progress in the corporate world.
“There’s not many female CEOs in the worldwide aviation industry, and it’s a credit to this country that a gay man was appointed 15 years ago to be CEO of the company, and now we have the first female accredited to the board,” Joyce said at a news conference on Monday in Australia.
