Tallaght’s Own New Artist – Molijah
Molijah, also known as Lucy Shah, is a Tallaght native and up-and-coming artist with her debut single ‘Going’ coming out on November 5, by London Brazal.
Shah grew up in Brookfield and her family moved to Ellensborough when she was 15. Now, the local artist has returned to Tallaght after living in Portobello.
In her school days, she went to St Pauls School in Greenhills and sang in the school’s choirs. Her primary school choir was of a very high standard.
They won several competitions and sang in the Mansion House in Dublin a couple of times.
She started writing and recording songs in 2018 following a one-year stint at BIMM Dublin.
The stage name, Molijah, was created by Lucy’s sister: “It doesn’t have any particular meaning.
It’s a nickname my sister gave to me when I was a kid. When I was trying to think of an artist name, my friend heard me being called that and thought it sounded cool.”
Molijah is a singer/rapper whose taste is influenced by the sounds of the Motown, soul and funk that filled the house on Sundays as her dad cooked, and the sounds of ABBA, Joni Mitchell and Mary Black from long car drives with her mam.
Molijah’s debut song was written in collaboration with long-time friend and producer Ois and recorded at various home studios in Dublin.
The musical sound of her songs is inspired by the basslines and the harmonies of Thundercat, the musicality of Tyler the Creator, the synth lines of the ’80s and the hip-hop of the ’90s.
The song lyrics of ‘Going’ emerged from a tough period of Molijah’s life while her mam was ill: “I was going through a very difficult time, and had decided that any kind of romance was off the cards for the time being. And then I saw her in the George.”
The up-and-coming artist called the experience “like ripping off a plaster” as she is excited about her first release but plenty nervous as her music comes from a vulnerable spot in her heart.
Racism, identity, religion, love, and loss are all themes that Molijah explores in the songs on her upcoming EP, to be released in 2022. ‘Going’ is the first single to be released across all major streaming platforms.
