The Career Expert with Sarah Louise: Why haven’t I heard back after applying for a job?

The silence can be frustrating, especially when you felt the application or interview went well.

However, in most cases, the reason has very little to do with you personally

One of the most common questions I get asked as a recruitment expert is, Why haven’t I heard back after applying for a job or even after an interview?”

The silence can be frustrating, especially when you felt the application or interview went well. However, in most cases, the reason has very little to do with you personally.

Firstly, hiring processes often take longer than candidates expect. Employers may be interviewing several people and will usually wait until all interviews are completed before making a final decision.

Even when a company is impressed with a candidate, they still need to compare skills, experience, and overall fit before offering the role. Recruitment rarely moves as quickly as jobseekers would like, and delays are very common.

Another very common reason is internal delays. Hiring decisions often need approval from multiple people, including HR, senior management, and sometimes finance departments.

If one key decision-maker is on leave, busy, or unavailable, the whole process can slow down. Candidates are not always aware of what is happening behind the scenes, which can make the wait feel even longer.

Sometimes the reality is that the employer liked you, but another candidate had slightly more experience or was a closer match for the position.

This can be disappointing, but it does not mean you did anything wrong. In recruitment, the final decision often comes down to very small differences.

There are also situations where the role changes, gets put on hold, or is filled internally due to budgets or company restructuring. Unfortunately, companies do not always communicate these updates as clearly as they should.

My advice is simple  follow up professionally, keep applying, and don’t lose confidence. Silence doesn’t always mean rejection; sometimes it just means the decision hasn’t been made yet.
