The Echo Sports Star of the Month for August – Shane O’Donoghue

KNOCKLYON man Shane O’Donoghue has been declared The Echo Sports Star for the month of August after starring for Ireland in a successful EuroHockey Championship II campaign in Gniezno Poland.

The Glenanne man, who was named Player of the Tournament, was no stranger to the scoresheet in this event and registered a brace in his side’s 6-0 demolition of Croatia that secured them a place in the semi finals and, with it, a berth in the World Cup qualifiers.

The team, will be disappointed they failed to reach the decider after letting slip a two-goal advantage against Scotland on their way to a 3-2 defeat in the penultimate rounds.

But a 4-2 triumph over hosts Poland, in which O’Donoghue again found the target for his fourth goal of the tournament, saw Mark Tumilty’s side sign off in third place.

Back home on the club front, O’Donoghue has played a huge part in Glenanne’s perfect start to the Men’s EY Hockey League.

Indeed he has scored in all of the Tallaght side’s victories over Lisnagarvey, YMCA and Pembroke so far this season, helping them go clear at the top of the table, two points the better of closest rivals Monkstown and Three Rock Rovers.
