The Echo Sports Star of the Month for May – Jenny Egan

AFTER a tremendous performance in Russia that saw her scoop silver at the ICF Senior Canoe Sprint World Cup, Lucan kayaker Jenny Egan has been declared The Echo Sports Star of the Month for May.

Overcoming the disappointment of missing out on this summer’s Olympic Games in Japan, the Salmon Leap athlete secured second spot with an impressive time of 22:41.017 in the Women’s K1 5000 metres at Barnaul.

She was agonisingly close to the top prize, with eventual winner Paulina Paszek of Germany a mere 0.087 seconds ahead of her at the finish line.

Egan followed that up with a dogged performance at the European Sprint Championships in Poznan, Poland where she managed a fourth place finish despite suffering a terrible start.

Finding herself towards the back of the pack early on, she worked her way back up to the front group, but consequently did not have the energy to match the pace of Hungarian girl Dora Bodonyi who led a breakaway in the closing 350m.

“Considering the start I had, to catch up to fourth place was really good and it showed me that my fitness is there” said Egan who will now be setting her sights on lining out in the Senior Canoe Marathon European Championships in Moscow from July 8-11.
