Thief with ‘appalling history’ jailed for three months after breaking into shop worker’s car

A THIEF has been jailed for three months for breaking into a shop worker’s car and stealing her handbag.

Kevin Brosnan, aged 41, already had an “appalling history” of offending when he carried out the theft.

Judge David McHugh imposed the sentence at Blanchardstown District Court.

Brosnan, of Ardmore Park, Jobstown, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to theft of the woman’s handbag at Circle K, Citywest Road on October 18, 2018.

The court heard the victim was working in the shop at the time when Brosnan broke the car window and took the handbag which contained clothes.

The bag was recovered near the scene.

The accused had 83 previous convictions for offences including theft and last April he was given a four and a half year sentence for robbery.

At the time of the theft, Brosnan made full admissions, was cooperative and the property was recovered, defence solicitor John O’Doherty said.

At the time of the incident, the accused was homeless in the Citywest area. Brosnan had had a bad drug problem all his life but was now drug free in prison. He had “put his hands up at an early stage,” Mr O’Doherty said.

“The whole matter is indeed heinous,” the judge said, adding that Brosnan had an “appalling history”.

He made the three months consecutive to the existing prison sentence.
