“IT’S a huge sense of relief,” said Thomas Davis star Olwen Carey who helped Dublin’s senior ladies football team win the Brendan Martin All-Ireland trophy for the second time in Croke Park on Sunday.

A late flurry of goals from substitute Sarah McCaffrey saw Mick Bohan’s side emerge 4-11 to 0-11 winners over Mayo at GAA Headquarters having lost to Cork in the previous three years.

“It makes up for losing the finals over the past few years. When the final whistle went it was an amazing feeling and we were just delighted to get the result.

“It still has not sunk in. We have put in a huge effort this year. We been training since the end of November at least four times a week between the gym and field work and it has all paid off now.

“In fairness since Mick Bohan came in we have focused on skills and we have put in a lot of work. This has certainly worked well this year and our results have shown.

“It’s nice to win an All-Ireland senior medal and to have it on your mantelpiece in years to come will be great,” she added.

Olwen, who is only 22-years-of-age has been in the Dublin senior set-up for the past four years and has played in the half back line and midfield.

The talented Thomas Davis star was delighted with the support the team received from supporters in the lead up to the final and how they stood by them over the years.

“The support we got from the players and my own club was fantastic. I had club members get in touch wishing me all the best before the game and the club brought 150 supporters to the game.

“The atmosphere at the game was brilliant and the supporters were amazing throughout.

“They have stood by us over the years and now we have the trophy to reward them,”.

The Dublin team have been celebrating all week and had a function in Dublin City Hall on Tuesday evening.

“It’s been great all week. Everyone is delighted for the team and it’s certainly the highlight of my career.” said Olwen.

The Dubs star has played inter county for the past seven years and has won a Minor All-Ireland medal and three Under 21 All-Ireland’s.

Ballyboden St Enda’s Rachel Ruddy also played her part in Dublin’s win putting in a big display in the full back line.
