Traffic light control boxes set for a major make-over

TRAFFIC light control boxes across South Dublin County Council are set for a creative make-over, with submissions being sought from the public on how 48 boxes countywide can be artistically upgraded.
South Dublin County Council has joined forces with Dublin Canvas, a public art project that brings flashes of colour and creativity to everyday objects – with the project painting 223 boxes in the Dublin City Council area over the past three years.

Here in South Dublin, it is proposed this summer to paint 48 traffic light control boxes, eight within each of the council’s local electoral areas of Tallaght South, Tallaght Central, Clondalkin, Lucan, Rathfarnham and Templeogue-Terenure.
The tag line for the project is “less grey, more play”, with the project striving to make South Dublin County a more attractive place to live, work and visit.
According to the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Paul Gogarty: “Across our county we have dozens of grey metal traffic light control boxes.
“By their very nature, they are located in high profile and highly trafficked areas.
“They often attract graffiti and have a negative impact on the local area.
“The Dublin Canvas initiative aims to tackle this issue in a creative and imaginative way, offering members of the public an opportunity to exhibit their own artwork, with the assistance of Dublin Canvas.”
He added: “I’d encourage interested community groups, artists and individuals to read the guidelines which can be found on the Dublin Canvas website, and apply.”
Seeking submissions
Dublin Canvas is actively seeking submissions of artwork from local artists, community groups and members of the public before the deadline date of Monday, April 16.
After the selction process in late April, it is hoped that the art pieces will be started in May and worked on over the summer months.
South Dublin County Council and Dublin City Council are the only two local authorities in the country currently engaging with the project.
