Two men arrested in connection to Ian McDonnell’s death

Update: Gardai have confirmed that the two men arrested on Wednesday, February 16, have been released without charge.

The men, both aged in their 20s, were released on the night of Thursday, February 17, and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. 

GARDAÍ have arrested two men in connection to a fatal incident that occurred in Clondalkin last month when 50-year-old Ian McDonnell was killed after being carried on the bonnet of his vehicle after intervening to prevent the theft of his car.

On Sunday, January 23, 2022, at approximately 6.15pm, 50-year-old Ian McDonnell was found lying on the roadway on Robinhood Road in Clondalkin with serious life-threatening injuries after he was carried on the bonnet of his vehicle, a distance, to where he was discovered after intervening to prevent the theft of his car.

Ian McDonnell tragically passed away last month

Mr McDonnell was removed from the scene by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition and passed away Friday evening, January 28.

Investigations carried out by Clondalkin Gardai have established that Mr McDonnell had attended his business premises, locally, a short time earlier.  While present he intervened to prevent the theft of his car, a grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, registration number 161 OY 1861.

In a statement today, February 16, Gardaí confirmed that two men in their twenties have been arrested and are currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Garda stations in the South West Dublin area as investigations are ongoing.
