Vincent de Paul launch appeals to help families

By Aideen O'Flaherty

THE Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) recently launched two new appeals to help them to support people who are struggling over the Christmas period, and are continuing their traditional appeals online this year too.

The Empty Toy Box Appeal will allow shoppers in the charity’s Vincent’s shops to purchase an empty toy box for a donation of €5, with the donation being used in the community they are bought in to help ensure that children and families have what they need this winter.

The Empty Plate Appeal enables shoppers to donate non-perishable food items at their local Eurospar shop, and Eurospar will then calculate the value of donations and provide SVP volunteers with the equivalent value in Eurospar vouchers.

The charity is continuing to run its SVP Virtual Gifts Appeal, where donors can choose a bauble representing on the charity’s virtual Christmas tree, selecting who they would like to buy a gift for and then choosing what region they would like their donation to be used in.

In keeping with the virtual theme, SVP is also running a Virtual Food Appeal, where donors can buy a virtual hamper for people in need.

Rose McGowan, SVP National President, said: “While so many things will be different for us all this Christmas, presents under the tree need to stay the same.

“Due to Covid-19 safety concerns, physical visits to people’s homes are not happening this Christmas.

“This means that the ability of the Society to deliver food hampers or toys is limited. So, in addition to financial donations, SVP is appealing for vouchers which can be exchanged for food and gifts of all kinds: toys, books, music, clothing etc.”

To donate and find out more about how to participate in the appeals, visit svp.ie and nominate your local area, call 0818 176 176, or get in touch by post to SVP, PO Box 1234, Dublin 1, with cheques made payable to ‘Society of St Vincent de Paul’ or direct to a regional office.
