Voluntary group unites to promote Tymon Park

A NEW voluntary group called Friends of Tymon Park is working alongside South Dublin County Council in raising awareness of the park’s facilities – alongside the threats to its flora and fauna.

The community group is made up of locals, nature lovers and regular park users who have united to promote Tymon Park and its amenities – in a bid to help secure a Green Flag for the Tallaght park.

The group has also been established to protect and care for the park, and is currently being supported by the council in dealing with the proliferation of single-use plastics which threaten the flora and fauna in local waterways.

One of the ways in which the volunteer group hopes to tackle the presence of plastic in the Park’s waterways and banks is through a monthly clean-up.

According to Oliver Hoey, landscape architect with South Dublin County Council: “We provide pop-up signage within the park to promote a two-hour clean-up [by Friends of Tymon Park], which takes place on the last Saturday of every month.

“After the clean-up the participants engage with the local authority to suggest initiatives that could further improve the facilities in the park to local community groups.”

Mr Hoey confirmed that Tymon Park is applying for the Green Flag award which, managed by An Taisce, is the benchmark national standard for publicly accessible parks and green spaces.

South Dublin County Council currently holds two Green Flags, one for Sean Walsh Park and one for Corkagh Park in Clondalkin.

Friends of Tymon Meet at 10am on the last Saturday of every month at both ends of the park, the Ranger’s Office Tymon Lane and the car park at the Limekiln end.

Both groups come together at the end of the clean-up for a cup of tea.
