Volunteers play critical role in supporting resilient communities

A VOLUNTEER recruitment fair is taking place in Tallaght Library as part of a weeklong celebration of volunteering.

Running from May 16 to 22, National Volunteering Week is a countrywide celebration of the contribution of volunteers, and their invaluable impact on communities.

Locally in South Dublin County, everyone is invited to attend a volunteer recruitment fair in Tallaght Library on Monday, May 16, from 10am to 1pm.

Local organisations there on the day will include Tallaght University Hospital, DSPCA, Littermugs, Citywise, Tallaght Cancer Support Group, FoodCloud, Cheeverstown, Rathcoole Community Centre, Cross Clondalkin Youth Service and Age Action. South Dublin County Community Volunteers will also be present.

According to Tricia Nolan of the South Dublin Volunteer Centre in Tallaght: “It’s been a tough few years for us all and it’s great to see volunteers across the country get back to doing what they love.

“From sports clubs to community clean ups, this week is dedicated to all those people who take time to give back and make our communities a better place.

“So many people had to put their volunteering on hold during the pandemic and as the country continues to reopen, we want to celebrate volunteers for all that they do.”

National Volunteer Week will be anchored by a digital campaign that shares personal stories of volunteering, with everyone encouraged to recognise the incredible impact of those who donate their time, energy and expertise.

Minister of State for Public Health and Wellbeing, Frank Feighan TD said: “Volunteering plays a critical role in supporting healthy, resilient communities, a reality that became even more clear during the pandemic.

“I want to thank volunteers nationwide for their dedication and commitment to supporting those most in need.

“It’s also a good time to take stock and remember that volunteers must focus on their own health and wellbeing while giving so much to others.”

National Volunteering Week runs from May 16 to 22.
