Volunteers will be collecting for Irish Cancer Society on Daffodil Day
OVER 6,000 volunteers will be taking to the streets on Daffodil Day, today, Friday, to help raise crucial funds for people affected by cancer.
Volunteers will be at locations throughout Tallaght, Lucan, Clondalkin and Ballyfermot selling daffodils to raise much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society.
Volunteers will be out in force to raise funds this Daffodil Day.
With cancer incidence on the rise, the Irish Cancer Society says it needs to raise €4m in donations on the day to meet increased demand for its free support services.
Over the course of Daffodil Day 150 people will receive a cancer diagnosis in Ireland, and over 40,000 people will hear the words ‘you have cancer’ by the end of 2019.
98% of the charity’s income is from donations, and money raised will help fund lifesaving cancer research and services including Night Nursing and the Society’s 13 Daffodil Centres.
Many volunteers have been collecting for decades, and most have personal experience of cancer, including James Gilleran, who will be dressed up in his special daffodil suit on O’Connell Street as he collects funds on Daffodil Day for the 25th year running. James is a longstanding Daffodil Day supporter following the death of his father and aunt to cancer.
RTE’s Nuala Carey will be collecting in memory of her late dad Maurice who died from cancer in November.
Dora Bracken has been collecting for 30 years and started when her hairdresser was diagnosed with cancer. Since then Dora has taken to the streets for Daffodil Day in honour of her father, sister, and husband, all who passed away from cancer.
