Weston blast off in Irish Hockey Trophy
WESTON men’s first registered their first win of the season after they beat Ballynahinch away 3-0 in the opening round of the Irish Hockey Trophy on Sunday.
Promoted from Division Three all the way up to Division One following the departure of two Leinster teams to the EY League, the Lucan side suffered defeats at the hands of Clontarf and Railway Union, both of whom are strongly tipped to challenge for the title.
Weston made a strong start in this year’s Irish Hockey Trophy, beating Ballynahinch 3-0.
Yet they recorded an encouraging win last weekend with Phil Baron getting them off the mark with a drag flick from a short corner.
They doubled their lead in the third quarter, Baron again doing the honours from another set piece move before Conor Murphy made certain of the victory with a reverse stick effort in the final quarter.
Goalkeeper David Carroll returned to Weston from Trinity this season and turned in a great performance against Ballynahuinch, pulling off fine stops in the second and third quarters.
Davitt Meehan was also solid in defence as was Alex McKeever in his sweeper role as Weston set up a second round clash with NICS on Saturday November 16.
Yet next up for the team will be a much-anticipated league outing this coming Saturday against a Bray, outfit who, like Weston, were promoted to Division One this season, albeit from the second division ranks.
