Women tell their inspiring stories

LAST Friday (March 9), Vicki Casserly was one of 18 inspiring women invited by the British Ambassador, Robin Barnett, to celebrate International Women’s Day at the Ambassador’s official residence at Glencairn.
The Lucan councillor has been an active advocate for people with disabilities. She also fundraises for Barretstown under Team James, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Enable Ireland and Our Lady’s Hospice Harold’s Cross.

She told The Echo: “It was a lovely evening. It was a great honour to be chosen as one of 18 inspiring women to celebrate International Women’s Day in Glencairn. I would like to thank the Ambassador for his invitation and to strike a conversation with such amazing women including Sinead Burke. I was very privileged and humbled to be in everyone’s company.”
Ambassador Barnett told The Echo: “I was delighted to host a group of wonderful international women to hear their inspiring stories and about the challenges that still need to be overcome.”
Cllr Casserly said that it was particularly inspiring to meet Fashion Journalist and Equality Campaigner, Sinead Burke.
Cllr Casserly said: “Sinead is just so inspiring. She is a real fighter for inclusion and diversity.”
Cllr Casserly’s older son James (13) has Cerebral Palsy, which affects his core and lower limbs. He had a selective dorsal rhizotomy in April 2012 which involved intensive physio recovery.
Three years ago he was diagnosed with idiopathic juvenile arthritis, affecting most joints.
Two years ago, he was diagnosed with osteoporosis, which when put together with his other conditions, can leave him in a lot of pain.
James’ charity, Team James has raised over €100,000 for Barretstown, the children’s charity that offers specially designed camps and programmes for children living with a serious illness and their families.
