You can be a link in the chain

The first Bra Chain event last year was a rip-roaring success – with over 800 bras hanging from trees in Corkagh Park – raising over €3,000 for National Breast Cancer Research Institute.
Clondalkin sisters Ann McDonnell and Lyn Lee started the initiative, to honour their late mother Cathy McDonnell, who passed away after suffering from breast cancer.
Speaking to The Echo, Kilmahuddrick resident Ann said: “We have been getting the message out this week, and are relying on word of mouth to spread the news.
“It is a family fun event, that will feature music, face-painting, gazebos, and a free DJ and equipment provided by Brú Youth Service in Crumlin. People arriving in Corkagh Park will see us near the car-park and the crossroads.
“We’ll be there from 12 noon till 4pm. You can’t miss us. We have been getting great support from our families, friends and the community.”
Last year, the pair collected bras from the public for weeks in advance, and were “delighted” with the turnout on the day.
Their hard work pay dividends, as collected bras hung together in the park with messages for loved ones who passed away, or loved ones receiving treatment for breast cancer.
“The number of people that showed up to help on the day was amazing. There was a lovely sense of spirit and community about the whole thing,” said Ann.
“During the day there were face painters and volunteers – including Ray Kelly who dressed up as Mrs Brown and collected money from passers-by.”
Ann had special praise for her friend Sheila Ward, who painted faces and collected bras, along with Ray Kelly, who helped collecting on the day. The sisters are hoping to make the Bra Chain event a yearly occurance.
Fine Gael Councillor Emer Higgins urges “women across Clondalkin to support” the cause.
Cllr Higgins said: “Every woman I know has old bras taking up space in their drawers, Ann and Lyn need them to help make an impact. Last year’s event was a huge success and I’m asking women across Clondalkin to support their efforts by donating to their collection.
“Ladies are being asked to donate €2 per bra and can bring them to Corkagh Park on August 30 at 12 noon, or contact Ann at 087 910 2542 to organise collection.”
