Young creators pick up awards

SOME Transition Year students from local secondary schools won awards in TU Dublin last week in recognition of their TV, podcast and presentation projects during a 12-week media studies course.

The teenagers from Caritas College in Ballyfermot, Tallaght Community School and Killinarden Community School took part in TU Dublin’s Young Creators Programme.

The programme aims to enhance students’ media literacy and communications skills through media-focused activities.

A cornerstone of the initiative includes equipping the young people with the skills to develop and create a short television programme or podcast.

The students’ work was recognised at the event in TU Dublin last Tuesday, May 2, where three local schools won awards for the projects they produced.

Caritas College won Best TV Show, Killinarden Community School won Best Podcast, while Tallaght Community School students received an award for Best Pitch/Presentation.

A spokesperson for TU Dublin, which ran the programme through its Access and Outreach Office, said it enabled students to gain confidence in media content creation.

“The experience gave students a real insight into the work required to produce media content,” they said.

“Some of the things that students said they learned from the experience was how many takes are required to produce a successful podcast, how many people are required in a studio, the range of elements involved, the importance of camera angles and how to conduct interviews and reports.

“Some said that it increased their confidence, while many said their favourite part was the experience of recording in a professional studio.”

One of the teachers involved said: “It has been an amazing experience for the girls and one that they did thoroughly enjoy… [it] gave not only them, but the school itself, a great boost.”

TU Dublin’s Young Creators Programme will run again in the next academic year, and additional information is available HERE.
