SOUTH Dublin County Council’s annual mattress amnesty and recycling event, which ran for ten weeks until September 26, proved to be a success, with over 2,000 mattresses collected.
A total of 2,662 mattresses were diverted from the waste stream to the circular economy over the course of the ten weeks, consisting of 1340 double mattresses and 1322 single mattresses.
This number of mattresses equated to a whopping 61,480kg of recyclable material.
The amnesty also included eight community-based collection days and a designated waste drop-off area at the site of SDCC’s Social Enterprise partner, RecycleIT, located at Crag Industrial Estate in Clondalkin.
A ninth collection morning was held at County Hall on September 26, to close off the amnesty.
Free waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling was offered during the amnesty, which led to 16,339kg of WEEE collected during the events.
SDCC stated that the cost associated with the amnesty is
“€85,181.75, which is partly funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.”
