A DIESEL spillage saw some 500 litres of fuel fall on campus grounds of Tallaght University Hospital on Friday, March 12.

The Echo understands a BAM construction truck was travelling over a speed bump when a 1,000 litre diesel drum crashed through a pallet on the back of the flatbed.

The incident occurred near the site of building work for the new paediatric outpatient and care centre at approximately 3pm.

A spokesperson for BAM said: “A minor diesel fuel spillage occurred from a BAM vehicle on a roadway within the Tallaght University Hospital campus grounds.

“BAM’s environmental health and safety procedures were immediately implemented, and a specialist company attended the scene to clean up the spill and adjacent road drains in line with established environmental protocols. South Dublin County Council was alerted and attended with Dublin Fire Brigade to inspect the clean-up operation.”

The Echo understands underground drains in the campus lead to the lake in Sean Walsh Park, however BAM said no contamination has taken place.

“Inspection and surveys were held over the weekend and again on Monday which confirm no trace of contamination,” said BAM.

“Ongoing monitoring is taking place.”

The Environmental Protection Agency had no comment to make as the matter was “passed on to South Dublin County Council”.

A spokesperson for the council said: “This is a matter for Tallaght Hospital. No diesel escaped to the public surface water system or reached the Tallaght Stream.”
