FOUR men were arrested following a garda operation targeting the use of high powered scrambler motorbikes.

It was the second such operation in the Ballyfermot area within the last year - part of a garda investigation into dangerous and reckless use of scramblers in public parks and roads.

At 7am on Tuesday morning, gardai from Ballyfermot Garda Station carried out four planned searches under warrant out on suspect’s homes.

Two high power scrambler motorbikes were located and seized during the course of these searches.

A garda spokesperson told The Echo: “One of these motorbikes has since been identified as having been stolen from the Blanchardstown area in November 2020. Four males, all of whom have been identified as driving scrambler motorbikes in public parks and public roads in the Cherry Orchard area, were arrested and brought to Clondalkin and Ballyfermot Garda Stations.

“Three of these males have been charged with offences including dangerous driving, criminal damage and other road traffic offences and are due to appear before CCJ District Court 3 this morning (Tuesday March 15).

“A fourth male is currently detained for questioning. This is the second such operation to be held targeting the use of high-powered scramblers in the Ballyfermot area and is evidence of commitment of resolve to tackle issues affecting community safety.

Cllr Daithí Doolan, Chairperson of the local Joint Policing Committee, said he welcomed the arrests.

“Full credit to Ballyfermot gardai. It shows what can be done when gardai are given the resources to take action against illegal scramblers,” said Cllr Doolan.

“This action will make our roads and parks safer places for our children and vulnerable. I hope we can see many more seizures in the near future.”

Last April, eight people were arrested in Ballyfermot following searches which resulted in the seizure of a scrambler, two quad bikes, two e-bikes and heroin with a street value of €3,000.
