Abankwah completes transfer to Udinese

ST PATRICK’S Athletic’s James Abankwah has completed his transfer to Italian Serie A side Udinese for an undisclosed fee.

The Inchicore outfit will still retain the services of the 18-year-old on loan until July, affording him the opportunity to also complete his Leaving Certificate in June.

The highly-rated centre half, who previously played with Cherry Orchard and, last year, made his breakthrough into the St Pat’s first team, is relishing his imminent move Italy saying “I’m buzzing and absolutely delighted.

“I found out last week about the interest, flew out on Monday, had my medical on Tuesday and signed today so I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m feeling very happy right now and I’m lost for words. I’d like to thank St Pat’s, Cherry Orchard, Melview FC and Letterkenny Rovers. I’m looking forward to getting going and still have a big six months at St Pat’s and my Leaving Cert.”

Abankwah moved to St Pat’s from the Orchard back in 2019 and won a league and cup double with the club’s Under 15s in his first season before helping the Under 19s to the league title the following year, playing three years above his age group.

The centre-back then penned his first professional contract in July and made his league debut at home to Derry the same week before helping the Inchicore side to the FAI Cup in November.
