Adam will help construct houses for orphaned children

A YOUNG man is fundraising to fund his trip to Lesotho, Africa, where he will spend time helping to construct a housing unit for orphaned children.

17-year-old Adam Sharpe has launched a GoFundMe to aid in his journey to get to the impoverished nation, in which one-in-three children are orphans.

The Tallaght native is linking up with the One Day project, which aims to build small family homes for orphaned vulnerable children and family units of four-to-six children in Lesotho.

“So I am fundraising to get myself over to Lesotho Africa as a part of the One Day project, the money will go a long way and directly to the charity,” he says.

“Lesotho is a small country in South Africa, which due to the direct impact of HIV/Aids has a substantial population of orphaned children.

“The project’s aim is to give these kids a home and already the project provides homes for over 20 children.”

For Adam, helping is something that comes very naturally to him.

A leader on the pitch with St Mark’s GAA Club’s minor footballers and hurlers, Adam is also a dedicated coach with the club’s Under 9s team.

In 2013, Adam’s parents Caroline and Stephen started going to Lesotho to contribute to the One Day project and this has inspired the Tallaght Community School student to keep the ball rolling.

“My parents first went over in 2013 – and a good few times since then – when the project started and I have had an interest since then,” he tells The Echo.

“When I heard a team was going over I approached my parents and explained that I’d be interested in going over.

“I will be heading over sometime between October and November, and while I am over there I will be involved in the construction of a new housing unit, while also supporting activities with the children of One Day.”
