All eyes on Euro C’ships for athletes

ALL eyes will be on the European Athletic Championships in Munich next week with Tallaght runners Rhasidat Adeleke and Joseph Ojewumi in action, reports William O’Connor.

Tallaght Athletic Club member Rhasidat will contest the individual 400m and also compete on the Ireland women’s 4x400m relay team, while Joseph will participate on the men’s 4X100m relay team.

It has been a hectic year for Rhasidat who has competed in the American Colleges, World Championship, National Championships and now the Europeans.

The 19-year-old only took part in the Worlds three weeks ago and her time of 50.81 was just short of her national 400m record of 50.70.

The result brought her home fourth in the semi-final, just 0.16 away from qualification.

The Tallaght athlete also helped the mixed 4x400m relay team into the final with a superb 49.80 second-leg run.

It was a fine performance for Rhasidat who has had a brilliant season broking Irish records at 60m, 200m, 300m and 400m.

“It’s Rhasidat first time at the European Senior Championships and everyone at the club are looking forward to seeing her and Joseph in action,” said Tallaght AC PRO Cecil Johnston.

“We are very proud of them and it’s a big deal for the club.  Its great for our club to have them running in the Europeans and the excitement is building.

“Rhasidat is doing really well, she should be in with a chance. Its been a long season for her and she was really unlucky to miss out by one place in the Worlds in Oregon,” said Cecil.

Meanwhile, Joseph will be in action in the 4x400m relay with the team coached by another Tallaght AC member Daniel Kilgallon.

“The lads have worked really hard in preparing for the Europeans and we wish them every success,” added Cecil
