Allotments Association encourages and promote the sharing of knowledge

South Dublin Allotments Association were blessed with one of the most perfect weather conditions of the year so far for their Master Composter Course on Saturday in Roseanna Hall and Friarstown Allotments.

30 plot-holders took part in what was the culmination of nine months work by the organising committee who obtained funding from South Dublin County Council under the Community Grants Programme.

The Allotment Association is dedicated to cultivating a vibrant and supportive community of gardeners across the South Dublin County Council area.

Pat O’Rourke, Secretary of the Association, told The Echo: “Our primary aim is to promote sustainable gardening practices, foster environmental stewardship, and encourage the sharing of knowledge and resources among our members. This course is just one part of our efforts to provide plot holders with the necessary skills and knowledge to make their gardening efforts as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.

“We are very grateful for the support of the council in making this course possible, and for subsidising the cost of composting bins for plot-holders and ensuring funding for the setup of the community composting demonstration site”.

The course was delivered by Ireland’s foremost composting expert, Craig Benton. Craig is also known as “Doctor Compost”, and is an eco-entrepreneur and environmental consultant that helps public sector agencies, non-profit organisations and businesses become more sustainable to combat climate change.

Participants on the course spoke highly about Craig’s passion for the topic and the expert advice he offered in answering all of their composting questions.

Craig said that: “It was a pleasure to deliver this course to a very dedicated and enthusiastic group of gardeners. I have no doubt that each and every plot-holder is committed to ensuring their gardening is done with net positive impacts on the environment.”

The course culminated with the setup and installation of a community composting demonstration site at the Friarstown Allotments.

Course participants also received 600 litre Eco King Composters to kick start composting efforts on their plots. The composting bins were provided as part of the council grant.

The demonstration site is now available for any member of the public who would like to see best practice when it comes to composting, and to ask any questions about getting started with composting at home, school or business.
