Group established to tackle anti social behaviour and criminality
A CHERRY Orchard Implementation Group has been established to tackle the causes and consequences of serious anti social behaviour and criminality.
Cllr Daithí Doolan, chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee, welcomed the move as a “step in the right direction”.
“This high level group must have the local community at the centre of its plan. This has got to be more that headlines and hype.
“Cherry Orchard has seen too many false dawns. This group needs to put in place a long term plan with immediate gains for the community. It must have guaranteed long term funding from both Government and Dublin City Council.
“Cherry Orchard is a proud, hard working community. Unfortunately a very small group of people are attempting to hold everyone else to ransom. Today could be the start of the end for those involved in undermining this great community.”
Senator Mary Seery Kearney, who represents Dublin South Central, who was speaking as acting Justice Minister Simon Harris announced the establishment of the group this week, said it will be chaired by Brendan Foster of Grant Thornton, and supported by a full-time co-ordinator.
“The coming together of experienced representatives from agencies to work together to build a stronger safer community in Cherry Orchard, alongside the excellent organisations who are already working hard on the ground to support this strong and proud community is the positive news they deserve,” said Senator Seery Kearney.
“The organisations I work with in Cherry Orchard have great belief particularly in the young people and their families, they are determined and ambitious for what can be [achieved] with a coordinated approach to development and security in this valuable community.
“I have already engaged with the Chair, Brendan Foster on several occasions and I look forward to the appointment of a co-ordinator who will support the work on the ground.”
