Anti-social behaviour in car parks has residents terrified

ISSUES of anti-social behaviour in underground carparks in Tallaght were back on the agenda this week, after reports of intravenous drug use underneath one apartment block was reported to Gardaí.

Over the past year, The Echo has reported on a number of cases involving incidents of anti-social behaviour in underground car parks that are easily accessible to members of the public – access which is putting the residents who live above at risk.

Most recently one apartment in Hunterswood was gutted and others destroyed by smoke damage when a bin in an underground storage area was set alight on October 31.

Last Friday, at a Joint Police Committee (JPC) meeting in County Hall, a request to monitor the Mount Seskin Court apartment block in Killinarden was lodged by Anti-Austerity Alliance (AAA) councillor, Kieran Mahon.

Mount Seskin Court featured in The Echo in early October, when the underground car park was engulfed in flames, destroying four cars.

As with the fire in Hunterswood, nobody was injured in the fire and no arrests have been made to date.
Cllr Mahon asked that the committee on Friday agree to monitor Mount Seskin Court after residents reported a constant intrusion through the security gates at the car park.

According to Cllr Mahon’s request, the car park is allegedly being used for intravenous drug use which is leading to safety concerns and the intimidation of locals.

Cllr Mahon told The Echo: “We have been contacted concerning anti-social behaviour at this location and the car park’s easy access.

“This is allowing people who don’t live in the complex to nip in and out and use it for shelter.

“This leaves people living above exposed to dangers and I think there is a responsibility on the management company to maintain the complex and make it safe and also on local Gardaí, if there are any incidents of criminality.”

He added: “We raised this at the JPC and will now monitor the situation and keep in touch with residents.”

Speaking to The Echo, Tallaght Superintendent Peter Duff said: “We have had patrols in and out of Mount Seskin Court, it’s an area that does get policed and we have responded to calls.

“There have been issues with a number of underground carparks across the area and officers do patrol these areas, when they can gain access.

“We have found that these underground carparks are prime locations for stolen cars and they do attract anti-social behaviour if not secured properly.”

He added: “We have a number of underground carparks which we patrol and we will continue to patrol Mount Seskin Court as part of this.

“We would encourage residents to report any incidents to the station.”
