ARMED Gardai responded to a disturbance at a clinic in Inchicore this week, detaining a man under the Mental Health Act.

The incident unfolded at the Inchicore Primary Care Centre in St Michael’s Estate on Tuesday morning at approximately 10am.

A patient who was in the waiting room at the time of the incident, alleges another man went into the doctor’s clinic for an appointment.

“The guy went into the doctor ahead of me and was in there a while,” said the patient who wished to remain anonymous.

“Next thing you know, a rapid response unit of between six to eight gardai burst in with guns strapped to their legs. All I heard was ‘drop it now’ and then they took the guy out of the clinic in handcuffs.

“Everybody got a fright. Elderly people outside were afraid to come in. No-one knew what was going on. I recorded it on my phone but a garda told me to delete it.”

The patient said he subsequently saw the doctor in question for his own appointment shortly after 11.20am.

“He wasn’t injured but seemed a bit shook,” he said.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai attended a care centre in the Dublin 8 area on Tuesday, March 5, at approximately 10am.

“A male (51) was detained under the Mental Health Act and conveyed to Kilmainham Garda Station. No further comment.”
