Barrier to be installed at pedestrian crossing

THERE are plans to install a barrier at the pedestrian crossing on Main Street in Tallaght village, to separate the footpath from a small car park that serves businesses in the area.

The issue with the “isolated” pedestrian lights opposite Macari’s, and the lack of separation between the car park and pedestrians, was raised by Tallaght Community Council (TCC) last October.

The group also highlighted the difficulties the parking issues in the section of the village and the aforementioned car park cause for people in wheelchairs and those who use mobility aids.

Independent councillor Mick Duff raised the issue with South Dublin County Council at a meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee in late December.

Speaking the day after the meeting, Cllr Duff told The Echo: “The issue with that pedestrian crossing has been raised with me many times by different people.

“It affects pedestrians, and people who are disabled and need accessibility.

“I said that it couldn’t be allowed to continue – it urgently needs to be addressed.”

The council confirmed at the meeting that there are plans for a barrier to be put behind the pedestrian crossing and “to protect the traffic lights” at the location.

This measure will mean most cars in the privately-owned car park will have to turn within the car park before driving forwards onto Main Street.

“Traditionally, access has been maintained to these businesses along Main Street,” stated the council.

“There used to be a low wall along these premises with entrances either side to access for deliveries etc.”

The council said it plans to install the barrier “and then monitor the situation to assess its effectiveness”.

Cllr Duff said he’s “delighted” that a barrier will be placed, and he expects it to be installed in the first quarter of 2023.
