TWELVE girls from a local baton twirling club have been selected to represent Ireland at the World Baton Twirling Federation International Cup in France this summer.

The twelve athletes, who range in age from 12 to 23, are from the Fettercairn-based Fusion Twirlers and they qualified for the Irish squad after taking part in national trials that were held by the Baton Twirling Sport Association of Ireland last week.

The troop will now go on to be part of a 62-strong team, made up of baton twirlers from around the country, representing Ireland at the competition.

Michelle Harris, who is part of the Fusion Team which runs the Fusion Twirlers club, told The Echo: “It’s out of this world [that they got selected] – they had very, very tough competition.

“They’re still on a high, they’ve been going into training singing.

“They’re working hard, they’ll be going up against the best of the best.”

The World Baton Twirling Federation International Cup will take place in France from August 4 to August 8.

There are 54 kids in total who train with the club, with Laura Molloy as director, and for further information about the Fettercairn Community Centre-based club visit the Fusion Twirlers Facebook page.
