THE wheels have been set in motion for a BMX track in the Dodder Valley area of Firhouse, with South Dublin County Council currently carrying out a feasibility study.

The council are currently in discussion with BMX Ireland/Cycling Ireland about a proposed BMX track in the Dodder Valley/Mount Carmel area of Firhouse.

The project, still at pre-planning stage, will be grounded in a feasibility study and environmental report currently underway.

When contacted by The Echo, a council spokeswoman said: “We are currently investigating whether this general area is a suitable location.

“We don’t have a specific location as of yet, this will all be guided by the feasibility study and environmental report.

“There is interest in the area for a track of this kind and if it goes ahead, the council will be working in partnership with BMX Ireland/Cycling Ireland.

“This area off the Firhouse Road can be accessed by a lot of people, but nothing is fixed, we have to wait for the reports to be finalised.”

The council is also working alongside DCBMX club on the construction of an international-standard BMX track, which would be capable of hosting national and international events, beside the Tallaght Leisure Centre in Jobstown.

The facility, which will be run by DCBMX on behalf of the council, will take between eight and 12 weeks to build, with hopes high that the track will be ready to go by the summer.

At a recent Tallaght Area Committee Meeting, Labour Party Mick Duff asked management if they were aware of an expression of interest from BMX Ireland/Cycling Ireland for an International standard BMX track in Tymon Park.

However, council manage-ment said that an expression of interest had not been received for this location, and that discussions between the two organisations were in regard in a track in Firhouse.
