Boden crowned champions after Nagle’s heroics

BALLYBODEN St Enda’s were crowned Dublin Senior One Camogie Cup champions after Sarah Nagle stepped up to split the posts and fire her side to a 2-9 to 2-8 win over St Vincents.

Playing on their home turf in Páirc Uí Mhurchú, Boden left themselves with a mountain to climb after Grace Gilroy and Alison Maguire contributed to a five-point advantage for the Marino girls by the break.

Gilroy, daughter of manager Pat Gilroy, who previously managed Dublin, found the net inside the opening minutes for the travelling side.

It took the Firhouse Road outfit a while to settle into the occasion but once Laura Nagle found the net, it seemed things may be on the up for the home side.

Despite the best efforts of Eimear O’Leary in the backline, Vins persisted pushing for more and Maguire sent them into a 2-6 to 1-4 lead by the break when she pulled on a loose sliotar that found the net.

Laura Nagle split the posts after the break and came agonisingly close to a goal, only for the brilliance of St Vincent netminder Deirdre Johnstone.

The other Nagle, Sarah, inspired Boden on when she started to really cut into the deficit from placed balls.

Unable to stop the waves of advancing St Enda’s players, Vincent’s saw their lead totally diminish when Laura Nagle elegantly slotted the ball into the net, bringing her tally to 2-2.

Momentum had well and truly swung in their favour and, sensing a win, Ballyboden heaped on the pressure.

Sarah Nagle, who was on free-taking duties for the day, sent St Enda’s into the lead for the very first time with moments to spare.

Rallying, Vinnies desperately scrounged for an equaliser only for the Ballyboden ‘keeper Emma Comerford to clean up.
