Bohernabreena landfill area near Dodder river earmarked for capping

AN APPLICATION has been submitted with South Dublin Council for the reprofiling of the capping on the Bohernabreena Closed Landfill.

Located on lands adjacent to the River Dodder in Friarstown Upper South, Tallaght, the Bohernabreena landfill consists of an area that is around 2.7 hectares.

The applicant, Joseph Bockarie, filed the planning application.

Capping of the landfill will comprise of reprofiling of the site with imported fill material and the installation of a final landfill capping system.

This capping system will comprised of 150mm topsoil on 850mm subsoil with a surface water geocomposite.

That is on a geosynthetic clay liner on, a landfill gas geocomposite on, a reprofiled landfill surface.

The works will also include the installation of a number of passive gas venting boreholes, a perimeter surface water drain, attenuation pond and outfall to the Dodder River.

The plans were filed as a Declaration of Exemption Section 5 application type.

An exempted development is a development in which planning permission is not required and in accordance with Section 5 of the Planning and Development Act, 2000, anyone can request an exemption.

However, just like a regular development, the application form still needs to be submitted to the planning authority – which, in this case, is South Dublin County Council.

From there, the council can request further information before making a decision as to whether or not an exemption has been granted.

As the application type has been flied as a Declaration of Exemption, submissions are not applicable.

A decision is due from the local planning authority on September 16, 2021.
