Speaking to the Echo, a witness said the boy was 12 years-old, and described the accident as a tragedy.

Gardai confirmed the boy’s age and that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy was one of three aboard the pony-and-trap, but the other two passengers and the horse are believed to have escaped without serious injury.

Speaking to the Echo, Cllr Gino Kenny said, “The mood in the area is one of shock, there were a lot of witnesses, and a lot of children who would have known the kid”.

Gardai are currently at the scene and the road is closed.

More to follow.
