Businesses concerned with plans to reduce parking in the village

BUSINESSES who provide health services in Lucan Village have formed an alliance over serious concerns they have with regard to plans by South Dublin County Council to reduce parking in the village.

The Health Alliance – a group of nine village businesses – was formed in response to the proposal by the local authority.

Previously covered in The Echo, the trial for a one way traffic system between Village Green and the River Liffey Bridge, will be rolled out at some stage during 2022.

However, the loss of parking spaces, which are currently at a premium, and the lack of alternatives offered by the council, will have a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of local residents, according to the group.

The alliance comprises clinics, pharmacies, and numerous health related disciplines, including Aspen Counselling, Lucan Village Pharmacy, McAleese/McKeown Dental Clinic, and Main Street Clinic.

They posted a public statement on the Lucan Newsletter this week, blasting local councillors for supporting the loss of parking spaces during a health pandemic.

Citing increasing hospital waiting lists due to cancellations because of Covid, they say it is vital to maintain local health services.

“All residents of Lucan know that a significant issue is the lack of adequate parking. People attending health services in Lucan Village are making necessary journeys and in many cases need to travel to their appointments by car,” said the alliance.

“The question to be asked of local councillors is, when hospital services are under such strain and community health services are currently accessible, why are you proposing to reduce parking in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The group request South Dubin County Council postpone the formal public consultation until Lucan residents have their say.

“We support the development of the Village Green as long it does not reduce local parking.”
