Caring about the future of South County Dublin

Caring about the future of South County Dublin

By William O'Connor

OVER 150 representatives from Community, Environment and Social Inclusion Groups from across South Dublin County attended the re-launch of the South Dublin County Public Participation Network (PPN).

The entertainment for the evening was provided by “RAMS in Rhythm”, a Newcastle-based active men’s group.
Mayor Sarah Holland opened the re-launch commenting about the PPN being “a crucial aspect of policy formulation and development across South Dublin County”.

Guest speaker Ruairí McKiernan highlighted how the PPN is an opportunity for community groups to influence local authority decisions, but only if the PPN is developed properly and community groups participate.

Thematic focus groups took place where a wide range of issues were discussed, including the social and health benefits of sports, planning provisions for men’s sheds, better consultation with residents’ associations, and the 2016 work plan for the PPN, among many other issues.

The key issue highlighted several times on the night was improving the communication between communities and South Dublin County Council.

South Dublin County PPN is one of the vehicles that will work towards achieving this.

In 2016, the PPN will launch a new online information hub for communities, organise networking events across the county and develop a county “Well-being Statement” in consultation with PPN members.

The PPN will also work on building the capacity of their community representatives on local committees and improving the two-way flow of communication with members.

The South Dublin County PPN is the official voice for community, environment and social inclusion groups in South Dublin County.

To date, over 300 community groups have registered with the PPN. South Dublin County has 17 representatives on various South Dublin County Council Strategic Policy Committees, the Local Community Development Committee and the Joint Policing Committee.

The PPN Secretariat consists of nine representatives who guide and oversee the work plan development of the PPN.

All PPN representatives are volunteers who are active on the ground in their local communities and are people who care about the future of South Dublin County.
