Carla claims gold at indoors

TEMPLEOGUE’S Nadia Power was fractionally short of a gold medal at the National Indoor Championships on Sunday, while Carla Sweeney topped the podium in the 1,500m event, reports Hayden Moore.

Sweeney served up a 4:22.23 time in the Women’s 1,500m event to claim a gold medal.

The Rathfarnham WSAF athlete fended off the dogged opposition of Amy O’Donoghue from Dundrum South Dublin AC (4:25.62) and Ellie Hartnett of UCD (4:26.43).

Meanwhile, in the Women’s 800m event, Nadia Power continued taking steps towards recapturing the form which brought her to the Olympic Games in Tokyo last year.

In September of last year, Nadia told The Echo that she had a “terrible year” after tearing the plantar muscle in her foot and struggling with plantar fasciitis as she tried to recover while competing.

At that time, while the 25-year-old was still a member of Dublin City Harriers, she had moved to East London to join the Adidas group and work her way back to full fitness under new coach, Matt Yeates.

Nadia Power

Throughout the first three weeks of January, Power completed a training camp in South Africa before storming to a silver at the Meeting National Indoor de Lyon on January 28.

Two-weeks-ago, Power registered 2:03.39 at the Boston University Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite and captured silver with a time of 2:07.22 at the National Indoors on Sunday.

Power finished 0.16 seconds behind winner Iseult O’Donnell in the Women’s 800m event.
